RDS clothing all feature the Red Dragons symbol. The company got the name “Red Dragons” from the early days of Colin McKay – he and his friends were all skaters in Vancouver, BC, and decided that they needed to come up with a name for their skate gang. They liked the Red Dragon novel by Thomas Harris (the movie was made in 2002 called Red Dragon). The link with the Chinese symbol goes even further back though, to the game of Mahjong, where one of three Dragon tiles is the red character for Center, also known as the Red Dragon…
So, when your friends ask, “What’s that mean”? I recommend just telling them, “Red Dragons!” But for you, all that extra info was free.
The RDS company was started by the Red Dragons, and has been around long enough to have just finished their second skateboarding video, “Skateboard Party“. RDS has a skatepark near Vancouver BC, and sponsors a pile of riders.
Metal Mulisha was originally thought up by Larry Linkogle and Brian Deegan as a name for their group of rebels at the time who were rebelling against dirt-bike corporate ways. It was the original guys like Faisst, Twitch, Link and Brian Deegan who didn’t really give a crap, and Brian Deegan thinks once there was a home for guys to actually be themselves it grew really fast. The original Mulisha compound was at Larry’s house, and back in the day Larry and Brian Deegan would make their own MM stencils out of cardboard and spray the Mulisha name across blank shirts, and all of a sudden it really took off the first year we hit X Games by rolling up with this image of spikes, black, and military mayhem. It just caught on and next thing you know everyone wanted Metal Mulisha shirts. So it didn’t take a brain surgeon to figure out we needed to start a company, and sell this stuff to people so they could have a little money to support the kids that were like them coming up through the scene who didn’t have any support
